What is doge? The history and origin of the dog meme explained

Hello internet, and welcome to Behind The Meme, where we take a look at the meaning and the origin of your favorite memes. Today we have a look at Doge. Okay, before we go any further, I first wanted to mention how people are divided with the way to pronounce doge. Some people say doj, like saying the word “doge” without the “d”. While others are convinced it’s doge, pronounced in a way that would rhyme with the word “vogue”. But thoughout my research online, I found this video saying this is the correct way to pronounce it. So I’m gonna go with this pronunciation through-out the video. Plus, it’s fun to say it this way. It makes me feel like I have a cool accent or something. Thoughout your time online, you more than likely have crossed “Doge”. The image of a Shiba Inu breed of dog with a very peculiar look on its face. I can never tell if this dog is happy to see me, if I scare him, or it’s just judging me. Look Doge, I know that you know that I sing along to Justin Bieber in my car. Please, please don’t look at me like that, stop judging me, stop. Usually the image of the dog is used online just for the novelty of its strange face. Sometimes it’s even photoshopped to appear more awkard than it typically is. Other times, the image of the dog is used with the company text, typically written in the comic sans font, and in the style that’s kinda hard to describe. Let’s just say there’s a heavy emphasis on the words: much, very, so, such, and many. Written in broken English, as if the animal is speaking to himself in his head. In february of 2010, a japanese kid in garden teacher named Atsuko Sato, posted images of her dog named Cabosu on her blog. I more than likely, butchered both your names, but I tried, ok, I tried. One of these images was the famous Doge picture, where the animal is seen glaring sideways at the camera in a strange way. It wasn’t until October of 2010, when the picture of the animal had first begun to appear on other websites across the web. The photo of the animal was posted to Reddit with the caption: “LMBO LOOK AT THIS FUKKEN DOGE” Where it receiverd heavy attention for having such a strange look on its face. The origin of the spelling of doge, it’s believed to have originated from a 2005 web series titled Homestar Runners, in which a character of the series uses the word Doge as a misspelled word for dog. “Not your dog. You crack me up. Crack. Me. Up. That’s why you’re my TOGE. What are you talking about? Doge’s use continued to spread and gain popularity online. The image of the strange dog continued to be shared and used through the years in various ways. It wasn’t long before Doge became the common part of internet culture that we all know and love today. When the owner of the animal was asked about the popularity of the dog, they said they were very excited and pleased to see all the attention it was receiving. but also confused with some of the images they saw. And to be honest, I don’t blame them for thinking that, people have photoshopped Doge to have some very strange appereances to say the least. The animal even began to appear on various merchandise for people to buy, proving Doge had truly crossed into the mainstream. At one point, YouTube even had an easter egg that occurred when you typed in: “Doge Meme” into the search bar. The website would change its apearance to be reminiscent of some of the original Doge memes with its use of color and font. In recent years, Doge has even become a currency, when a company called “Doge Coin” started a website in which the animal is used as the mascot of the company. The company basically offers services similar to that of Bitcoin but only with an internet meme style. Doge even appears on a race car of a NASCAR driver named Josh Wise. That’s pretty crazy. Doge has even made appearances in other media, like in 2014, when he appeared in “Weird Al” music video for his song, “Word Crimes”. So it’s now apparent that Doge has become far more than a meme, It’s now an image that has crossed into mainstream culture, and helped define what internet culture is all about. The great thing about the internet, it’s that it’s always changing, so who know where Doge may end up next. But hey, that’s the internet for you, and on the internet, memes are king.
