Inside the online posts of Colorado shooting suspect Maya McKinney

Online postings apparentl

onflicting picture — one
f an average teen who lik
s hanging out with his fr
ends, and another that sh
ws a tortured kid who exp
rimented with drugs, dete
ted his classmates and wa
struggling to fit in. Maya McKinney, a 16-year-
ld who’s undergoing a fem
le-to-male transition and
who goes by Alec, and Dev
n Erickson, 18, are accus
d of entering STEM School
Highland Ranch outside De
ver on Tuesday with two h
ndguns that authorities s
y they used to kill one o
their classmates and inj
re eight others. A Twitter account believe
to belong to McKinney, w
th the handle “KoolCid199
,” displays a picture of
im and Erickson, with wor
art that boasts, “UP ALL
NIGHT.” On Dec. 29, KoolCid1992 t
eeted, “i wasn’t diagnose
with kool kid syndrome b
t i just took adderall ”
n a reference to the popu
ar, but often abused, pre
cription drug used for at
ention deficit disorder. But on April 16, it appea
s as if McKinney was tryi
g to get sober, or at lea
t joked about it on Twitt
r. “yuh wait what #sobergang
” KoolCid1992 wrote in th
tweet. When a friend replied, “o
g really?,” KoolCid1992 w
ote back, “your boy is fi
ally getting clean like t
e mf dishes i just did #l
ao.” On Jan. 25, he apparently
expressed his distaste fo
his classmates at STEM S
hool Highlands Ranch, twe
ting: “F–K stem kids i sw
ar to f—–g god.” Then on Feb. 21, KoolCid1
92 retweeted a message ab
ut a gun and shooting him
elf. “i wish i had a GF,” the
weet starts. “G-gun F-for the purpose
f shooting myself.” Another message he retwee
ed in November pointed to
a possible mental health
ssue with the statement:
depression loves to seal
verything I love.” KoolCid1992 also tweeted
bout his mom and how she’
handled changes in his b
havior. “*my mom talking to me ab
ut how she hates the new
lec*,” the tweet begins. “Mom: I miss my Alec can
ou find him for me Me: I miss my dad can you
find him for me yeeeehaw
otem.” Finally, on April 29, jus
over a week before the s
ooting, he wrote an omino
s tweet. “When you’re putting your
elf in life threatening d
nger ,” the suspect wrote
with no further explanat
on. McKinney’s apparent Insta
ram account has the name
Alec Mask The Slump God”
nd shows photos of himsel
and his friends, present
ng a more mundane picture
of life. The Instagram account has
been disabled and is only
accessible through the in
ernet archive “Wayback Ma
hine,” which does not dis
lay the dates on the phot
s or the comments. The most recent photo pos
ed to the account shows M
Kinney beaming in formal
ear next to a girl who’s
earing a prom-like dress.
In the photo, McKinney’s
rms are around the girl a
they pose in front of a
amily piano. Other photos show McKinne
posing with friends in f
ont of a psychedelic wall
tapestry and making drama
ic faces, while in others
Alec is seen wearing a N
rvana shirt. In another p
oto with a silly theme, M
Kinney is seen in a tie-d
e rainbow headband, chomp
ng on a leaf. The account’s first post
s a snap of the stage at
Cheap Trick concert. During a vigil Wednesday
ight to honor Kendrick Ca
tillo, who died charging
t Erickson when he allege
ly opened fire in his nin
h-period British literatu
e class on Tuesday, stude
ts at the high school sto
med out in protest of pol
ticians using the event a
a platform for gun contr
l. Students began yelling th
y “wanted to be heard” an
then chanted “Mental hea
th” while cursing at the
edia. The Daily Mail reported a
friend of Erickson and Mc
inney commented on a soci
l media post that said th
duo were troubled and di
n’t get the help they nee
ed. “Devon did not do what he
did because he’s a libera
, or to make a statement,
the friend wrote. “He did it due to interna
struggles. They’re both
truggling with mental hea
th issues and this is a t
me for awareness.” The friend then addressed
McKinney. “Had people supported him
in the way that he needed
and deserved, he would no
have struggled so much t
at he got pushed over the
edge… Please recognize th
t mental health awareness
is important. Supporting
GBT youth is important. T
ey didn’t get the help th
y needed, and they NEEDED
it,” the friend went on. McKinney and Erickson wil
both appear in court Fri
ay, when their formal cha
ges will be announced. Related Video Video length 45 seconds :
