Gone But Not Forgotten! Kobe Bryant Biography | Black History Month

Known in the world of sports as a relentless
competitor and Black Mamba. Stay tuned for more as we share a mini-biography
about Lakers legend Kobe Bryant. The life of Kobe Bean Bryant began on August
23, 1978, where he was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His name came from the Japanese steak his
parents saw on a menu; his middle name, Bean, came from his father’s nickname.. Kobe’s parents were Pamela, and Joe “Jellybean”
Bryant who was a professional basketball player that played in the NBA and internationally. Although Kobe was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania,
he spent most of his early childhood in Italy. Kobe would return home to Philly to play basketball
at Lower Merion high school becoming a star recruit. He would later skip college to go straight
to the NBA. That same year the Lakers also acquired NBA
superstar Shaquille O’Neal. Through a rocky start, the duo would go on
to win three NBA Championships. In 2001, Bryant married 18-year-old Vanessa
Laine, whom he had met when she was dancing in a music video. The two would go on to have four daughters. After a 2004 season, the Lakers fired legendary
Coach Phil Jackson and traded Shaquille O’Neal. This is where Kobe would begin rebuilding
with the Lakers showing his star power like in 2006, where scoring 81 points against the
Toronto Raptors. Kobe would take the Lakers back to the NBA
Finals three years in a row winning his fourth and fifth title even beating the Lakers rivals
the Boston Celtics in 2010. In 20 seasons with the Lakers, Kobe would
achieve major heights in the world of basketball earning an NBA MVP, two Finals MVP, two Olympic
Gold Medals, being a 17 Time NBA All-Star and many more accolades. Kobe was loved around the world and by Lakers
fans. In fact he was loved so much that both his
number eight and number 24 jersey were retired and hang in the rafters at Staples Center. In retirement, Bryant also wrote and narrated
an adaptation of Dear Basketball for a short-animated film which won an Academy Award in 2018. Sadly, the life of Kobe Bryant came to an
end on January 26, 2020, in a tragic helicopter crash killing Kobe, his daughter Gianna and
seven other victims in Calabasas, CA. The Life of Kobe Bryant was a tail of many
