Many of you have been analysing the tracklist for the upcoming Sabaton Album ‘the Great War’. While the subjects of some of the songs are quite easy to guess, the exact topic of ‘A Ghost in the Trenches’ is was a mystery for many – although some did predict it correctly. The song is about the Canadian (and indiginous First Nations) soldier Francis Pegahmagabow, the deadliest sniper of the First World War. Indy – having researched and hosted the ‘The Great War’ YouTube channel for the duration of the war, knows as much as there is to know about the subject, and is the most suitable person to tell you the story behind the song.
Enjoy and Cheers!
This Guy is me In BF1
So this is what indy looks like after a few drinks lol
Thank you so much for this. <3 From Canada
When the mud speaks Canadian
9:46 "Soldier treated by Nurses Betty Edwards of New England and the faceless demon Gor´gan from 7th layer of hell."
Just to add to something Indy said, the 3rd Canadian Ranger Patrol Group is a unit primarily made up of First Nations members from northern Ontario. There are five groups across Canada's north.
Joakim: I’m Indy NeidellIndy: And I’m Joakim from SabatonMe: Wait, that’s illegal
Very good document!
The bit about Francis sneaking up to the guard positions and cutting pieces of uniform off sleeping soldiers sounds kind of like the practise of counting coup, at least based on my limited knowledge from the short Wikipedia article.
It's a shame the song isn't about Vimy, but I'm glad Sabaton are recognizing the Canadian military with a very interesting hero of ours. Can't wait!
Frost the snowman HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM
If Frosty the Snowman isn't in the album I will be so pissed
what an absolute madlad.
17:33 Drunk Indy
roses are redviolets are blueif you have a roman legionarie helmetwhy do you not make a song about roman empire too?

White Death vs Ghost in the Trenches
Хороший канал. Продолжайте в том же духе. Good channel keep up the good work.
this has to be the sabaton song I'm looking so forward to. LESS THAN A WEEK LEFT
Such a good song and an amazing story.
Francis is basically Caveira from Siege. Lol INTERROGACIONNNNN
The song is fucking amazing! Listened to it this morning. The history edition book is gorgeous!
He even enters the sleeping quarters of the German soldiers; to cut off pieces of the uniforms that they are actually wearing as they sleep. Now let that sink in for a bit, the place he is in is possibly the closest to actual hell on earth that you or anyone can imagine. It's muddy, dirty, loud and lethal. you're under constant threat from mortars, machine guns, patrols and defense works, everywhere around you there is death and destruction. If you do not succumb to the fighting, chances are, you will catch disease in the close unhygienic quarters. And it is the smell of all of this that stays the longest in the memories of the men who suffered in the trenches. It is the odder of thousands of men living at close quarters. Their faeces and urine, rotting food, molding cloth and decaying wood. The smell of sulphur, carbon, saltpeter and other chemicals from the fighting. And most significantly the overpowering stench of rotting flesh from the thousands of dead that lay unburied in no mans land. And in this apocalyptic world, Francis navigates silently, unseen and seemingly untouchable. He is truly a ghost in the trenches.
So hes basically the WW1 version of Guts (Berserk) – the 300 man killer?
This guy sounds awesome he's in hell and he's just playing with it
What does Indie mean by "signs that in 2019 would be called post-traumatic stress disorder"… we've been calling it that for a long time and there's been continued distinction between ptsd and shellshock over the century. Not sure what the "2019" is supposed to mean but I didn't get any memo on PTSD this year 😛
Am I the only one who's hoping to get a Sniper Elite game with Francis as a protagonist?
Another name never to be forgotten.
Just heard the track. I cried. Thank you for honoring Canada and her Firat Nations.
My great uncle was killed by one of those sniper types
I came from the future. The song is EPIC!!!!
Simo :laughs in white death
if i was german an see this man i would piss myself four times
I appreciate you guys showing off some other less known history even though everyone else is upset that this was released on June 6.
Just imagine the conversation back at his home trench…
"Where the HELL have you been, Private!?""Trenches, sir.""Don't get smart with me, or I'll have you digging graves!""Their trenches, sir."And then he just dumps a pile of clothing scraps from the enemy.
Tip of the spear, of the already Canadian tip of the spear
“And… There’s a playlist. Cool shit. You know you want that.” Made the episode perfect
For those wondering why anyone would nonchalantly sneak into an enemy trench and just chill or take their stuff… it's an indian thing. However, this sort of behavior is referred to as Counting Coup (a show of bravery and skill). To count as a Coup, a warrior, at the very least, needed to defeat an enemy in battle with the epitome being simply touching a foe and to escape unscathed. What also counted as a Coup was stealing an foe's belongings (horses, weapons, ammo) and fade without them noticing.
This also was a very subtle way for an indian to say, I can waltz into your camp. Go where I want. Do what I want. Take what I want. Walk right back out and there's not a damn thing you can do about it. A very scary concept to contend with when dealing with an opponent who is the North American equivalent of a ninja.
Francis, being born and raised into a native society and culture (especially at the tail end of the Indian Wars) instilled a special kind of mentality. This coupled with a certain set of skills honed over a lifetime of hard living and the sheer will to survive would serve a sniper and scout very, very well.
I'm Canadian, from Montreal, and honestly don't know much about Canadian military history. I had never heard of Frances prior to watching this. I'm really happy you guys were able to tell this story, it's a truly remarkable one. I hope you'll continue to dig into Canadian military stories in the future.
Around the time Francis was born there was a major rebellion about 250 kilometers away in what is now manitoba that was led by Metis Chief Louis Riel.
Imagine being the guy that has to deny this man a Canadian citizenship.
What has happened to Joakim's beard???
Lindy and Tom singing Frosty The Snowman is the most wholesome thing I've seen this week
Удивительная история удивительного человека, а песня получилась шикарной и стала моей самой любимой из нового альбома.
40 to 1 kill rate you say?
BAPTIZED IN FIRE, 40 TO 1!
Heavy metal pianist and war historian: [exist]Also heavy metal pianist and war historian: Frosty the snowman, was a jolly happy soul
Sabaton: well, these songs wont make themselves.
that name swich tho
Frosty The Snowman should have been released as a bonus track
Why don't they teach these stories in school?
Does anyone know if the content of this video is available in Text form? I really want to have this video in text. . .
Love this song!
Now I know where I know Indy from lol, I've seen the german format of the great war back then in 2014, lol. Mind blown
one deadly sniper , worked alone , and came back from Passchendaele . a true man of War :p (a word quibble ? where ? i don't see it x) )
Canadians are weird man , no offense to Canadians tho
Proud to be Canadian!
Great video! Loved Indy singing Frosty too!
This is my second favorite track from The Great War, (favorite is Attack Of The Dead Men)
It is beyond ridiculousness that Canada and The United States of America would deny citizenship to the First Nations and Native Americans who lived in both places for thousands of years.
I’m glad I listened to the song.I am also happy to have been directed here to hear such interesting stories that I’d not hear normally.
It's interesting that this is celebrated sniper is a Canadian aboriginal – where in I think the second world war Australia's best sniper was a Australian aboriginal, who by law of the time technically was not supposed to be allowed in the army, but his skill was so good he was accepted anyway. Weird how that's a carrying theme.
Somebody needs to make a movie about Francis and another on Simo. Exceptional soldiers.
Hands down the best song on the new album, cant stop replaying it
This is my favorite song when driving my STRV in World of Tanks which btw has a Sabaton emblem on it. Makes his way from to bush to bush alone moving undetected.
6:47 When you hit Sneak Skill 100
WHERE HAS SABATON BEEN MY ENTIRE LIFE!?!?!
@Sabaton History, I just realized there is no mention of this in the Great War album: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6KHoVBK2EVESomething like faith in humanity restored for a little bit.
As a Canadian , i am sad that they dont teach about this man in our education system . What a hero!
Service guarantees citizenshipWant to know more?
This is actually pretty sad.
His warpath was inspirational…
12:29 Olympic, is that you!?
Damn, this album was in the works for at least 3 years. It really shows in the songwriting. Its a big step up from the last album (which was amazing in its own right)
Americans: we're the best snipers!
Canada: hold my beer.
4:20 I believe it's called a medicine bag
Soooooooo coooooool !!!
rest in peace francis pegahmagabow, deep respect for him and all people who served in a war
Fuck you Canada and fuck you U Arse of A. Who is your hero?
Can we get a Sabaton Christmas album?
When I first heard this song. I though it said "pick up a gavel" instead of Pegahmagabow. Lol
CANADA F*CK YEAH!!!!!🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
Indy is the new lead singer of the band XD
where can i get a coat like that thing is nice
09:10 oh ! Festubert is where I live at
Not even 3 seconds in and already full of factual errors!
Awsome man thank you for this. They definitely should be teaching this in canadian schools.
Perhaps he was doing something similar to Counting Coup.
I would love for this to become a podcast so I can just listen while I’m out and about
Anybody else notice the vader shirt
I got messed up by that intro
Did anyone hear that they said each others names
Simö Häyhä: Are you challenging me?
Miigwech for the video. I'm Ojibwe. I would love to see his story on the silver screen one day.
Pegamahgabo perfectly illustrates the difference between a soldier and a warrior.
Does anyone know if Francis' nation practised counting coup? Or at least did traditionally? Seems like what he was doing cutting off those pieces of uniforms.
My first wife's great-uncle was Sgt. Tommy Prince, another great warrior.
I got drunk at a bar one night and rambled on about this guy to a group of Aboriginals. They loved it!😅
Oh man, this is amazing
